Why do GLP-1 medications cause muscle loss?

Any fast weight loss, whether from a medication, surgery, or aggressive dieting, can pull from both fat and muscle. Without enough protein and resistance training to signal your body to keep muscle, a meaningful share of what you lose can be lean mass. A DEXA scan is how you see whether that is happening to you.

When should I get my first scan?

Ideally before you start, or as early as possible, so you have a true baseline. If you are already on a GLP-1, the best time to scan is now, so you can course-correct from here.

Can a DEXA scan tell fat from muscle?

Yes. That is exactly what it measures. It separates fat, lean muscle, and bone, region by region, including visceral fat around your organs. The scale and a tape measure cannot do this.

Do I need to stop my medication?

No. Kalos does not prescribe or manage your medication. We measure your body composition and give you the nutrition and training guidance to lose fat while protecting muscle, alongside whatever your prescriber has you on.

Is the scan safe?

Yes. A DEXA scan uses a very low dose of radiation, far less than a standard X-ray and comparable to a few hours of normal daily background exposure.
